UPDATE 17/10/11: Consequence of Sound have a brilliant review of Gabby's show featuring many of these pictures!
It isn't just sheer musicality and flair that Gabby Young and Other Animals (Facebook, Spotify) bring to the stage. Bare-footed playfulness and a proud, unabashed revelry in great songs is on display too.
I wrote about Gabby last year following her band's colourful show at Bloomsbury Ballroom. Since then they have released their debut album "We're All in this Together", toured around the world and recorded a benefit single for survivors of the Japanese Tsunami. Their homecoming show at Camden's legendary Koko venue proved to be their biggest, most magnificent yet, with backing singers, dancers, aerial performers and a packed house.
Given the scale of the event, myself and the other photographers were only allowed to photograph the first few songs. Those with long zoom lenses though were able to snipe shots from the balconies. Forunately I had been snapping like crazy. In dark, difficult environments such as this, it largely comes down to the law of numbers. One just has to persevere and hope that amongst the dozens of motion blurred shots, there will be a few crystalline "moments."
